Prosperity for Our People

Increasing Wealth Of Our People

National Alliance Candidate Melisa Molanus is a strong proponent of devising viable means of putting mechanisms in place that will lead to the increase in wealth of the population of St. Maarten. She contends that the government has to find a way to increase the living standards of our citizens by fostering an improved atmosphere for better business opportunities.

  • The creation of better business opportunities has to be coupled with protection for small entrepreneurs and a lower cost to engage in our economy. Additionally, legislation has to be introduced that will develop and nurture opportunities for real estate ownership for the local population.
  • Furthermore, we must assist our younger citizens in generating the necessary documentation for business incorporation in a more efficient, expedient, and user friendly manner. In other words, the process has to be vastly simplified.
  • As good corporate citizens, Government owned companies must also play their role. It is of utmost importance that they promptly provide Parliament with their financial records in order for Parliament to be better equipped and informed as to where they can assist with alleviating undue stress (i.e. cost of utility bills etc.) to the general public of St. Maarten.
  • If government can regulate the cost of essential goods and services (i.e. food and fuel) of private companies, it surely needs the same regulatory power to address the basic needs of electricity and water which is made easier by having access to financial records. We must find a way to decrease the cost of electricity.
  • We must also look at further increases in the minimum wage and help to facilitate said raises with the easing of the cost of “beneficiary” taxes which in turn creates increased capacity for the net portion of salaries.
  • Lastly, we must endeavor to protect the tips of employees associated with the service industry. Businesses should not be allowed to extract operational costs, taxes, or any other costs from the tips that are garnered while operating a business.
  • Introducing St.Maarten history into the schools curriculum in terms of it's economic development and how that has changed the social fabric over time.
